Summer Skincare: Our Top Tips & Treatments for Radiant Skin

Posted in: Cosmetic Medicine Education General Health & Wellness

How can I keep my skin youthful and healthy during the summer? We’re often asked to recommend cosmetic procedures that are best for summer because many people take time off to enjoy the all-too-short Michigan summer. However, some cosmetic rejuvenation treatments require downtime and for patients to stay out of the sun before and after treatments. This means that summer plans and activities must be considered before scheduling more advanced treatments.

Protect to Prevent Skin Damage

The first and foremost thing that everyone should do is protect yourself from the sun. Sunscreen can help reduce the risk of skin cancer, including melanoma, and early skin aging, such as fine lines and wrinkles and hyperpigmentation or sunspots that are caused by the sun.

Even on cloudy days, we recommend choosing a SPF 30 or above, reapplying approximately every two hours or more often when sweating and getting out of water, and staying out of the sun during peak hours. Wearing a hat and sunglasses can also provide extra protection for the face, and wearing rash guard long sleeves or shirts can help protect the chest and arms.

Deep Renewal

Exfoliation is also important year round. Whether you have dry, normal, oily or sensitive skin, exfoliation can bring new life to your complexion. Regular skin cleansing is clearly beneficial, but it doesn’t always work at a deeper level. Exfoliation also speeds up the skin renewal process, allowing smoother, healthier skin cells to take their place which will help with fine lines and wrinkles and discoloration. Other benefits include skin detoxification and complexion brightening, as well as helping skincare products and makeup work better and go on smoother.

Here at the Cosmetic Treatment Center, we have treatment options to help exfoliate the skin including dermaplaning, a variety of chemical peels, microdermabrasions, and the MicroLaserPeel®. These treatments range from mild to more aggressive exfoliation and are done by our trained professionals.

Wrinkle Warriors

Other great summer treatment options are injectables for rejuvenation. Neurotoxins like Botox®, Dysport®, or Xeomin® help relax the “dynamic” wrinkles caused by muscle movement. These areas include crow’s feet, frown lines between the brows and forehead lines caused by repeated muscle contractions from frowning and squinting over the years. Results can last up to three to four months.

We can also use neurotoxin for hyperhidrosis, or excessive underarm sweating. Beat the summer heat and feel confident and dry all summer!

Fillers are another injectable used to combat the effects of aging. Fillers provide immediate lift to wrinkles and folds, restoring lost volume and smoothing out the signs of aging with natural-looking results that last. They effectively treat deeper folds and moderate to severe wrinkles and may last up to a year with optimal treatment. There may be some mild swelling and/or bruising so these treatments are perfect for those extra days off or that long weekend.

In addition, other minor procedures that are perfect for the summer are body wraps, waxing, facials, makeup application for weddings or social events and brow tinting. More advanced procedures can be done during the summer months, but sun exposure must be limited before and after, which can be difficult during our sun-drenched Michigan summers.
